February 21 and The Ekushey Book Fair 2003
February 21 is a symbol of glory of the Bengalee.
On this day in 1952 the children of the nation sacrifice their lives
for the protection of their mother tongue from a pre-planned conspiracy
of the then West Pakistan rulers. The martyrs of this movement for
whom we feel proud in the world at large are Salam, Barkat, Rafiq,
Jabbar and others.
Like the previous years, the nation will pay homage
to the martyrs of the Mother Language Movement in 1952 on February
21 this year.
Different sectors and different classes peoples
will place wreaths at the pavement of the Central Shaheed Minar
on Dhaka University campus on first hour on February 21.
Like the previous years, differents organisations
will chalk out daylong programmes country wide. The programmes will
include discussions, cultural events and placing wreaths at the
Shaheed Minars.
In 1999, UNESCO adopted Bangladesh resolution giving
would recongnition to the Bengalis' sacrifice of blood for mother
tongue, UNESCO proclaimed February 21 as International Mother Language
Day.
The month-long Ekushey Book Fair 2003 will begin
on February 1 marking the Mother-Language Day on February 21. Prime
Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will inaugurate the fair as chief guest.
Every year Bangla Academy and Bangladesh Book Publishers
and Sellers Association organise Ekushey Book Fair. This year the
fair will remain closed from February 11 to February 15 on the occasion
of Eid-ul-Azha. After five days of closure, the fair will again
begin on February 16 and continue till February 28.
Ahmed Mahmudul Haque, proprietor of the Mowla Brothers,
a leading publishing company of the country said, "We fear
that the Eid vacation will hamper our business in this year's Ekushey
Book Fair. Every year, we have a target for selling a good number
of books".
Since the introduction of the book fair more than
two decades ago, the number of its participants has been increasing
steadily reflecting the growing interest of book lovers, who eagerly
wait for this yearly event. It is very logical to describe the book
fair as the main attraction of Ekushey programmes. February 21 is
now observed as the International Mother Language Day in the whole
world. In 1998, UNESCO took initiative for observing this day in
the whole world every year.
The Bangla Academy also will arrange literary discussions
and cultural functions at its premises every day during in February
this year like previous years.
Some new books that are expected to reach this years
fair are Selected Poetry of Bangladesh, Selected Essays of Bangladesh
and Selected Stories of Bangladesh published by the UPL, Bishanna
Bishoi o Bangladesh of Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman, Rachana
Samogra-3 of Akhteruzzaman Ilias, Mutho Phoner Kavya of Nirmalendu
